Our Favorite Trends for Fall / Winter
The Fall / Winter season is here and it comes with new silhouettes, materials, concepts and colors. After lots of fashion shows and analysis, here we share with you the trends that captivated us the most and that will become a must in your closet this year.
1. Ponchos & Capes
One of the key trends we’ve been following since pre-fall runways is the poncho, and our favorite choice was Burberry Prorsum’s, which was inscribed with the model’s initials for an original yet pleasant surprise (see more about this blanket coat and how to get it here!). This time ponchos and capes were a key accessory in most of the collections and we could see them in a great range of colors, patterns and textures to satisfy every taste. Dolce & Gabbana, Prabal Gurung, Etro, Barbara Bui, Calla, Roberto Cavalli, Burberry Prorsum, BCBG Max Azria, Emilio Pucci, Issa, Sacai, Saint Laurent and Alexis Mabille presented us with some of the most noteworthy suggestions.
2. Back to the 60’s
The runway sure made us nostalgic, but in a good way. We definitely made it back to the 60s with great mini-skirt and A-line mini-dresses usually paired with sweaters, coats, tights and knee-high boots. Some of the most tempting alternatives were suggested by Versace, Alice + Olivia, Alexander Wang, Lanvin, Saint Laurent, Sacai and Louis Vuitton.
3. Robe & Belted Coats
Fitted and military coats are forever stylish, nevertheless there is a wind of change this season and with a good twist. This time it’s all about wrapping yourself in robe and belted coats. The alternatives suggested were mostly loose fitted for a cozy feeling, while the knot or belt did a great job accentuating the figure. We saw this trend in a wide range of colors, textures and lengths, making for lots of options to choose from to fit your style. Some notable examples were shown by Altuzarra, Dries van Noten, Imaan Hammam, Alberta Ferreti, Escada, Bottega Veneta, Louis Vuitton and Philip Lim.
4. Long Vests & Coats
There is surely an over sized and cozy trend this season and why should we only make it wider when we can make it longer? So this time around: length matters. Not only long and straight coats paired with little dresses and boots are the center of attention, but the long vests are also making a great comeback! We saw them in a wide variety of colors and materials to give the simplest outfit the right pop of style. Some interesting choices were provided by Adam Lippes, Christian Dior, Emporio Armani, Maison Martin Margiela, Derek Lam, Givenchy, Keneth Cole, Michael Kors and Rodarte.
5. Show Some Leg
For those who have great legs to show, you don’t have to wait for a red carpet this season! The slit is in and we saw it everywhere, from the simplest mini or maxi-skirt to the most elegant gown. So prep those legs for fall / winter this year because the bare leg trend is here to stay and designers such as Alexandre Vauthier, Anthony Vaccarello, Prabal Gurung, Elie Saab, Altuzarra, Carolina Herrera, Maison Rabih Kayrouz and Ralph Lauren enlightened us with lovely inspirations.
6. The Boyfriend Fit
Who said that the over sized trend was only for outerwear? This is getting serious. Office wear and business casual outfits throughout the shows gave us a late 70s – early 80s feeling (without shoulder pads, thank God) and definitely the loose fit pants were the highlight. Designers such as Akris, Assembly, Christian Dior, Adam Lippes, Philip Lim, Valentino, Hermes and Michael Kors presented us with relaxed fit pants mostly high-waisted. There were also very interesting cropped versions presented by Escada and Giorgio Armani. These pants were combined either with matching straight cut blazers or with long vests, coats capes and fur accessories, resulting in a perfect boyfriend (Wall street style) look.
7. Bohemian Dresses
This was also one of our most favorite trends, the bohemian dress. We saw an amazing collection of patterns ranging from ethnic to floral, that combined with see through fabrics and asymmetric silhouettes gave us the perfect bohemian but ethereal feeling. Most of the suggestions were diversely patterned asymmetric gowns such as the ones offered by Elie Saab, Luisa Beccaria, Valentino, Vera Wang, Dolce & Gabbana and Burberry Prorsum; nevertheless there were all-black and all-white options such as the ones shown by Alberta Ferreti and Alexander McQueen and short dresses such as the ones suggested by Etro and Tory Burch.
8. The Cozy Look
Warm and comfy was the statement trend during this fall / winter runway. We were surprised but pleased to see that knit over knit outfits were perfectly combined to give the ultimate stylish comfort. Head to toe knit ensembles and sporty looks were shown by Boss, Celine, A Detacher, Chanel, Lanvin, Michael Kors, Sacai and Nina Ricci among others. So if you are the kind of girl that loves staying in your PJ’s as long as possible, you’ll love this comfy movement without sacrificing style!
9. Fur and Feathers
Fur is a classic in the fall/winter runways but this time we enjoyed great suggestions aside from the usual capes and long coats, and what’s even better is that feathers came along to provide another alternative to master the sumptuous look. Fendi, Tory Burch, Celine and Balenciaga suggested new shapes and accessories such as hoods, collars, muffs, scarves, bags, boots and even heels. On the other hand, bold colors were presented by Elie Saab, Gucci and Ralph Lauren. And incredible feather dresses and accessories were offered by Alberta Ferreti, Lanvin and Nicole Miller.
10. Velvet Love
If you are looking for a luxurious feeling but fur and feathers are not your thing, maybe this is the trend for you. Velvet is making a comeback bringing with it silky silhouettes and also comfy but stylish looks. Some of the most interesting choices were given to us by Elie Saab, Emilio Pucci, Emporio Armani, Nina Ricci and Tom Ford.
11. Checkered & Plaid
Plaid has been with us for a while now, and this year is not the exception. Nevertheless this time we were delighted to see not only plaid but checkered approaches in a wide variety of colors and sizes to give the traditional look a twist. Our favorite ensembles were suggested by Tommy Hilfiger, Tess Giberson, Valentino, Delpozo, Alexis Mabille, Calla, Rag & Bone and Etro.
12. Leopard Print
Yes! Leopard print is still in for this fall / winter, and of course who can resist it?. Fashion houses like Alexandre Vauthier, Badgley Mischka, Carved, Balmain, Dsquared2, Givenchy, Gucci, Saint Laurent and Giorgio Armani featured the iconic print in coats, dresses, bold skirts and accessories.
13. Sexy Leather
And of course how can we miss leather? A trend that never fades away and that comes this season with a glamorous, sexy and even retro perspective. Take a look at our favorite choices from J. Mendel, Balenciaga, Givenchy, Lanvin, Saint Laurent, and Zuhair Murad.
14. Dazzling Metallics
The perfect form of party glamour was present in the runway with metallic, sequined and shimmery pieces. Metallics just have a way to make any outfit elegant and festive chic. Fashion houses like Hugo Boss, Elie Saab, Badgley Mischka, Narciso Rodriguez, Diane von Furstenberg, Paco Rabanne and Saint Laurent, among others, embellished the runway with some of the most dazzling alternatives.
15. Our Fave Palettes
And last but not least, our favorite palettes this season. Even though we saw lots of neutral colors (ivory, cream, beige, light brown), specially for the knit and cozy numbers, the iconic black, white and red tones, we couldn’t avoid to feel captivated by these imposing and bright shades that were widely seen throughout the shows:
